The songs on this CD were recorded on a home tape recorder (Grundig TK20) in late 1962, six weeks or so after St Leonard's youth holiday at Biggar, Lanarkshire in Scotland (summer 1962). These are the earliest recordings of the crossBeaTs. The recordings took place around the time (Sep-Dec 1962) when we were experimenting with 'current' secular songs and playing what Christian songs were around - for pleasure (our own, nobody else's!) Tracks 1-5 were made on the afternoon of 6 October 1962, at a practice at St Leonard's Church Hall Bootle. The practice was for the "Harvest Festival Concert" that evening, to be held in the church hall - after the "Harvest Supper". Track 5 may be the first ever recording of someone 'covering' a Beatles song (PS I Love You). Tracks 6-9 of this CD were recorded at that evening concert in the church hall - with the tape recorder and microphone placed on the floor of the stage (6 October 1962). The four of us (John & Eddie Boyes, Tony Mathias and Eric Knowles) had been asked to 'do a turn' at the "Harvest Festival Social". Again, the significance of Track 10 below is that it may be the first recorded public performance of someone covering a Beatles song. (PS I Love You). Tracks 11-13 were made at home - at some later date. Clearly none of the songs below were written by the group. |
