| In a similar layout to
the songs page on this site, there follows tables of
the chords for the crossBeaTs songs. The chords for each song are written out in order, but not shown synchronised to any words, so that you have to use your common sense. You will see that some 'sevenths' have been noted as being optional (ie put in brackets) - this may also be interpreted as 'alternating' with the seventh. Other times sevenths are missed out altogether, but can still be put in (this should be obvious). Also some quick, or less obvious, chord changes have been put in brackets or with dashes between them - for example in 'Tears' there is a quick change (Fm-F). On occasions a chord is repeated on the same line when a new 'phrase' starts - and sometimes it isn't (I have not been entirely consistent, so common sense is needed). Also, I have not used superscript and subscript, so that chords like 'A47' look awkward - it would have looked neater with superscript and subscript (eg A47 or A47). The boxes below will explain how you can hear the songs while looking at the chords. Note that the chords show the keys that we played the songs in. Because of tape speeds, and the fact that we may have tuned the guitars higher or lower on occasions, they may sound higher or lower in the MP3 files. Obviously you can change the keys to make the chords easier - no one in their right mind would play 'Tears' in Eb (but we did - and never used capos in any songs!). Our preponderence for weird keys came from early learning via a pianist (Tom Cooper) who knew nothing about the guitar, and for whom 'normal' keys were C, F, G, Eb, Bb, Ab. We learnt songs that had been written for piano, so when we started writing our own songs, we did so in silly keys like Eb. Only later did we use the 'guitarist' keys of E, D and A etc. Note that some chords here may be different from the Crossbeats songbook, in which there were one or two mistakes. Conversely, there may also be a few mistakes in the chords here (typing errors etc), so please let me know if you think something sounds 'wrong'.
