The song: "Do You Remember" was written by John Millington (tune & words) and Tony Mathias (words) in the Autumn of 1964, and played from December of that year onwards. It replaced the song "Softly and Tenderley (Come Home)" as our 'closing song' (a kind of commitment song) - you can find the latter on track 10 of the CD CB1. "Do You Remember" was recorded at CBS studios, 104 New Bond Street London, on 7 & 8 April 1967 and appeared on the crossBeaTs' LP "Crazy Mixed-Up Generation". To play that version of the song, click or (this is the version from the CD of the LP on CB14). However, in 2017 I received an e-mail from Dominica Arendse of Bellville Catholic Church Choir, Bellville, Cape Town, South Africa, She had sung "Do You Remember" in her church choir as a child many years before but, as the choir mistress had passed away, the sheet music was missing. She wondered if I had a copy so that she could teach it to the current choir. "Do You Remember" was one of the songs which had been used in the hymn book "Youth Praise 2", so I scanned the pages and sent them to her. Hopefully, at some future date, I may have a recording of the Bellville Catholic Church Choir singing the song on this web site. We shall see. The e-mails "to" and "from" Dominica are printed out below: |
8 May 2017 - From Dominica Dear Mr Boyes I was so excited to find the Crossbeats website recently, because as a child, we sang Do you Remember in our choir at church and I always loved it. Unfortunately, our choir mistress died quite a few years ago and the sheet music seemed to have disappeared. We sang it with an organ and Im almost sure it was in a book (not just sheet music). Do you have any idea how I could get hold of and purchase the music of this beloved sacred song to teach my choir? I live in Cape Town, South Africa, so a downloadable resources would probably be best. Thanks for in anticipation for your response. Kind regards Dominica Arendse |
8 May 2017 - My reply that evening Dominica So lovely to hear from you! I thought I didn't have a copy of the 'sheet music' for 'Do You Remember', but then realised that an old copy of the hymn book "Youth Praise 2" had the song in it. I have scanned both pages so that it should be complete, and I have attached both pages to this e-mail. Please let me know if they are 'un-readable', and I will try and do something else. Blessings to you and your ministry with the choir. Eddie |
9 May 2017 - From Dominica the next day Dear Eddie O, Wow, wow, wow! Sorry, I am so excited! The internet (and Google) are just fantastic. All I can say is a humble, thank you, thank you, thank you!. I told the choir about my find last night and sang the song (with my croaky flu-recovering voice) and told them to keep fingers crossed that I got a response. I and the choir are most grateful and I will treasure this music forever. Thank you so much for the scan yes, I think that is the book that the music was in, which has unfortunately disappeared. The scan is perfectly clear. Thank you once again. I appreciate it so much. Warm regards from a slightly Wintery South Africa. Dominica |
