Songs

This page has two main things in it. There is first a long list of the songs that the crossBeaTs played between 1963 and 1975.  Following that, there is a table of all of the songs that the group wrote all or part of - this time with all the words included. The songs are more or less in chronological order (though there are uncertainties in the 1970s).  In the early years, the songs were generally those of other people, usually from American books published by Singspiration, many influenced by the singing at St Leonard's church Bootle.

Remember, there was no Contemporary Christian Music scene in the early 1960s.  Any Christian music for youth that was in print originated in America, and was really '1950s' in style - often labelled 'western-style'.

During the early 1960s the members of the crossBeaTs began to write their own songs.  It took until about 1965 before the group could play exclusively their own written material at a single booking (14 songs had been written by the summer of 1965).  At first, the songs we wrote naively contained the whole of the Gospel in each song (a common trait in young Christian musicians in those days).  As time went on, the songs focused on aspects of the Gospel as they relate to the life experiences of young people and the life of Jesus.  The 'breakthrough' for us in this regard was probably writing the song called "Tears" (December 1964, see below) which focuses on the tears that may have been present in Jesus' life.  This was our first attempt at subtlety!  It may be, however, that later we became too subtle - as the words of some of the later songs became less and less explicit.  Our justification may well have been that a more explicit sharing of the gospel would come from the introductions to the songs and from those speaking at the meetings.

If you look through the chronological list of our songs below (and probably those of other Christian bands of the time), you can sense the way the then current popular culture influenced and affected what was written.  There were 'protest' songs, songs about 'real love' during the time when 'all you need is love', and then songs with a clouded and misty feel about them during the drug scene of the later 1960s.  In terms of musical style, the crossBeaTs were fairly monochromic.  Although we as a band could see changes over the years, I suspect that others would say that little changed in terms of style.  We were well past our 'sell by date' by the late 60s

WORDS OF SONGS written by the crossBeaTs - in chronological order from 1963.

THE PLAN (June 1963)
John Boyes

or

from the (live) CD CB2a
My sin has gone, His light has shone
Into my soul - He's made me whole
And now I am free, praise God I see
What Calvary means to a sinner like me

He'll never let me go or leave me lonely
He means far more to me than all the world
I've vowed to serve Him, 'til the battle's been won
I'm praising my Saviour, my sin has gone

I am but a stranger here - heaven is my home
I'm only passin' through - heaven is my home
Danger and sorrow stand round me on every hand
Heaven is my fatherland
Heaven is my home, heaven is my home

What if the tempest rage - heaven is my home
Short is my pilgrimage - heaven is my home
And time's wild wintry blast soon will be over past
I shall reach home at last
Heaven is my home, heaven is my home

There at my Savour's side - heaven is my home
I know I'll be glorified - heaven is my home
There are the good and blest, those I love most and best
And there I too shall rest
'Cos heaven is my home, heaven is my home

And so I'll murmur not - heaven is my home
Whatever my earthly lot - heaven is my home
'Cos I know I shall stand there at my Lord's right hand
Heaven is my fatherland
Yes heaven is my home, heaven is my home

Ever since the world began,
God saw the way in man - to sin
To go against His will, so He thought of this plan.
God thought of this plan.

God made man from earth,
And gave him from his birth - a will
To do just what he pleased, but he started to sin.
Man started to sin.

But God so loved the world He gave us His Son
That whosoever believes in Him won't perish
But live forever and ever in perfect love
With God the Father in heaven above

The next part of His plan
Was to live on earth like man - and work
Just like any other man, but He knew no sin.
Christ knew no sin.

LOVE (January 1964)
Eddie Boyes

or

from the (live) CD CB2a
Have you ever heard the story
Of the Prince from heaven above?
Who came to tell a sinful world
Of His mighty Father's love
He didn't have a golden cot
To lay His Princely head
He was born into a stable
Where the cattle slept and fed
My Jesus ... came for me. My Jesus ... came for me

The years went by, the Babe grew up,
the Boy became a Man
Then came the day to leave His home
to follow through God's plan

He went around the countryside
Teaching an doing good
He gave men sight and hearing
And He lived the way we should
But there were those who hated Him
For the love He came to show
He was just a simple carpenter,
"What could this fellow know?"
My Jesus ... came for me. My Jesus ... lived for me

You would think the story ended
on a hill called Calvary
For there they killed the Son of God
when they nailed Him to a tree

But although the world rejected Him
And the wonder of His love
Death couldn't hold the Son of God
Who came from heaven above
His Father raised Him from the grave.
He's alive forever more
And He's waiting now to change your life.
Just open up the door?
My Jesus ... came for me. My Jesus ... died for me
My Jesus ... has set me free

Think of how God keeps us safely day by day
Think of how He loves us though we go astray
Think of all the care He shows us
Think of all the help He gives us
Think of all His love in every way

Think how much God loves us though we're full of sin
Even though we often have no time for Him
Think of all the things He gives us
Think of all His goodness to us
Think of His concern for you and me

But think of how He left His riches and His glory too
How He left His home in heaven
Came among us - because he loved us

Think of how He died for us on Calvary
Think of how He suffered there in agony
Think of how He there forgave us
Think of how He rose to save us
So that we might live eternally

But think of how He left His riches and His glory too
How He left His home in heaven
Came among us - died to save us

Well, think now, do you love Him after all He's done
Will you take Him as your Saviour now the victory's won
Will you live for Him; He will guide you
He will always be beside you
As your Saviour as your Lord and King
As your Saviour as your Lord and King

Love sent Jesus down
To leave His throne and leave His crown
It was love, yes it was love for you and me
Why did He leave that land?
Oh why? I just don't understand why
He should love some one like me.

How can I claim His love,
And know that Power from heaven above?
How can we be as one? God my father, I His son
.

I don't deserve such care.
It seems to me it's so unfair
That a Man should be punished in my place
They say that God still thinks of me,
And that He sent His Son to set me free
Well it true? Is it true can I be free?

Love held Him to the tree,
It was love that made Him die for me.
It was love that made Him suffer all that pain.
And now I see for the very first time
It was His love for me and not mine
Now it's clear, I needn't fear but simply come

That's how I can claim His love,
And know that Power from heaven above?
That's how we can be as one? God my Father, I His son.

It was love, God's love, wonderful love.

SOMETHING'S MISSIN' (October 1964)
John Millington

or

from the (live) CD CB4
He's coming. my Jesus is coming.
Yes Jesus is coming.
He's coming for you and me
When He went away, He told us to watch and pray
'Cos He said He'd come back some day
He's coming for you and me

He's coming again,
Oh can't you see that He died for you and He died for me?
He wants us to live eternally
So, if heaven's not your home
Then you can take Him as your own
He's coming. my Jesus is coming.
Yes Jesus is coming.
He's coming for you and me

In that sudden hour, we will see Him in all His power
We won't know the day or the hour that
He's coming for you and me
But He comes again will He take you then
Or will He leave you here with other men
Now are you ready, are you ready to go with Him?

When I see the sunshine, when I see the rain
When I see the things that grow, that feelin' comes again
And I know, yes I know. When I see these things I know
That there's a God of love and He made these things
I know

When I see a little child, when it opens its eyes
When I see that smiling face, and even when it cries
I know, yes I know. When I see a child I know
That there's a God of love and He made us all
I know

When I'm feeling lonely and blue
I know God is waiting, and I know He'll pull me through
I know that He can do it, because He did it once before
When I first came to Jesus, and I know, I know
He's mine forever more

You may think you've got everything.
You may think you don't need a thing.
And go on living by yourself
Well, listen, something's missin'

You go to parties all of the time.
You may think that you're doin' fine
Is this your life from day to day?
Well, listen, something's missin'

There's something missin' and Jesus is His name
Although you're sinful, He loves you just the same

Why not take Him right away, and let Him come in to stay
He'll be your Friend right from the start
Well, listen, something's missin'

Tell me what was on her face as she laboured to the dawn
Tell me what was on her face, before her Son was born
Tears, tears of pain, were there tears, tears of pain?
As she bore her son, and Jesus was His name

Tell me what was on His face as He saw the sick and lame
Tell me what was on His face as He saw the sin and shame
Tears, tears of pain, were there tears tears of pain?
As He saw His people sick, dying and lame

He came to bring them peace,
He came to bring them life and happiness
He came because He loved them. Yes, He loved them
And He even loves you. Yes you.
What could He do for you?

Tell me what was on His face when He was crucified
Tell me what was on His face
When He suffered and when He died
Tears, tears of pain, were there tears, tears of pain
As He suffered on the Cross, bearing our shame

He came to bring us peace,
He came to bring us life and happiness
He came because He loved us. Yes, He loved us so
And He even loves you. Yes you.
What could He do for you? For you

Jesus came down to earth, from heaven above
Yes He came down to earth. Wonderful love!
Do you remember, long ago
Do you remember, He loved us so

He didn't have to die for you and me
He wanted us to live eternally
Do you remember, though you weren't there?
Do you remember, or don't you care? Don't you care?

Is it nothing to you that Jesus died?
Is it nothing that He was crucified?
Can't you believe? Won't you believe?

He didn't have to die on Calvary
He wanted us to live eternally
Do you remember, long ago?
Do you remember, He loved us so? Loved us so

Do you remember, though you weren't there?
Do you remember, or don't you care?
Don't you care? Don't you care?
Don't you care? Don't you care?
Do you remember?

They travelled all night around the town,
Askin' for a place
But everybody they asked that night
Had the answer written on his face
"Oh, I'm sorry to say, you've had it today.
I think you'd better move on"
Well, after all you see, it was only God's Son

Well at last they came across this pub,
They knocked upon the door
We only have a dirty old shed,
Can you bed down on the floor
It was pretty rough, she'd had it tough.
Her time had almost come
But after all you see, it was only God's Son

Well of course all this happened long ago
If it happened today, would we do it? No, no, no.
Oh, no, no, no

Oh, it should have been a palace
Because the King of kings was there
Only a handful brought Him gifts,
Didn't the others care?
Is it the same today, do we turn Him away,
When all is said and done
Well, after all you see, it is only God's Son

There is Someone waiting, and He waits so patiently
To be your Friend, and take away your sin
He waits continually, so patiently
He's waiting. Oh won't you come to Him?

He doesn't ask that you should know the greatest things
So come to Him and don't delay
Come to Him as you are
Remember He's not far away from you,
He's not far away from you

Why keep Jesus waiting, don't you know that He loves you?
And He's the answer to your emptiness my friend
He waits continually, so patiently
Will you say yes? It's worth it in the end.

Listen to this 'cos it's just for you
We've found a Friend and, oh you can too
But He wants to know if you want to,
He wants to know if you want to

He can bring happiness from despair
He can make rainbows when they're not there
But he wants to know if you want to
He wants to know if you want to

My Jesus will be with you right away
Be with you every day
If you will only say you'll come to Him today

You've no need to worry about it any more
He can be yours whether rich or poor
But he wants to know if you want to
He wants to know if you want to

He won't come in to you if you say "No"
He won't push Himself but, oh, He won't go
'Cos He wants to know if you want to,
He wants to know if you want to

You've no need to worry about it any more
He can be yours now forever more
But he wants to know if you want to
He wants to know if you want to

Many times, I have been so blue
Many times, been bored stiff right through
Been so bored to tears with my poor life
That's the way it was, that's the way it was
That's the way it was - that was life

Many times, *********
Many times, *********
Been so bored to tears with my poor life
That's the way it was, that's the way it was
That's the way it was - that was life

Now I've got something new, friend
I have found a new Friend
I am tellin' you that I aint bored no more no more - no
Many times, *********
Many times, *********
***************
That's the way it is, that's the way it is
That's the way it is - that's my life
Now I've got something new, friend
I have found a new Friend
I am tellin' you that I aint bored no more no more - no

Many times, *********
Many times, He's been good to me
***************
That's the way it is, that's the way it is
That's the way it is - that's my life

Runnin' away, is this how you seem to be?
Day after day, you just wanna be free
Are you afraid, in case your friends start leaving you?
Maybe you are, and you don't know just what to do
Maybe you are, are you afraid?

Listen to me, you need worry no more
Why can't you see, this is what you're lookin' for
Are you afraid that you won't find true happiness?
Maybe you are, and you're content with such a mess
Maybe you are, are you afraid?

Are you afraid, afraid of your friends? Well forget them
Are you afraid, and they're holdin' you back?
Well don't let them

Why not give in to God, why not give in today?
Take all your sin to God, He can take it away
Are you afraid, in case your friends start leaving you?
Maybe you are, and you don't know just what to do
Maybe you are, are you afraid?

If only you could see what Jesus means to me,
I know you would take Him
If only you could know how much He loves you so,
I know you would take Him

Don't you know that He died for you?
Don't you know He cares?
Don't you know He's alive for you?
So don't pretend He's not there

If only I could say what He means to me today,
I know you would take Him

Just take what He's givin' And then you'll be livin'

If only you would do the things He wants you to,
Right now you would take Him

Where do you hide
When your so-called good times disappear
That feeling inside,
When you're all alone and no one's near
You've been searching more and more
Have you found what you're looking for?

How can you say
That you'll get by with all your fun
When skies are grey,
Who do you turn to for the sun
Though you've not heard this before
This is just what you're looking for

You know you need someone to help you to go on
You need someone, a friend that you can lean upon

Why do you hide?
Don't you know the Lord can see you through
Why don't you decide,
And break away to something new
I know you've not heard this before
This is just what you're looking for

You can find Him, that's for sure

Let's face it friends, the world is in such a mess
Before life ends, let's start livin'
Kid's that live for kicks know no way to fill the emptiness
Protest songs are hits, but what ' they sayin'
They say that we're lost, we're all sittin' waitin' for the bang
We know that we're lost, but what's the answer?

Crazy mixed-up generation, there is only one solution
Jesus is the Great Sensation
Won't you stop and think, now you're on the brink?

Beats think life's a joke, these long-haired cynics of society
They don't do a stroke, but why should they?
Mum and dad at home have lost control of their pride and joy
Oh how they moan "What's the answer?"

Can you be so blind, you can't see the truth about yourself?
Or don't you mind where you're goin'?
Jesus knows it all; He knows your situation now
Why do you stall when He's the Answer

Don't you believe it, it's a dirty rotten lie
When people tell you God's just pie in the sky
(They say that)

"It don't really matter, it don't really matter"
That's what they'll tell you, that's what they'll say
"Don't take any notice, go your own way"

"It don't really matter" - they're all mad as a hatter
"Just laugh and ignore them, and they'll go away"
But you listen to us, and hear what we say

It matters very much so don't fool around (with your life)
Your life could be so full
Not half as dull as now

How can you be so blind?
You've got to make up your own mind.
Face it now your life is empty and bare
There's a big space because God isn't there

I … wouldn't know what to do.
And I … could never take care of you
But then, I…'m only me

I … wouldn't know where to start.
No no, I… could never change your heart
But then, I…'m only me

Yes, you need somebody else to save you
And, now may I suggest, you try the One who made you

Because I… wouldn't know what to do.
No no, I could never take care of you
But then, I…'m only me

Won't you stop and think about the life you're tastin'
Are you really worried about the time you're wastin'?
Well, we've come to tell you now
Yes, we've come to tell you how
How you can redeem the time that you've lost

You've been working overtime wasting your time
You may even think that I'm wasting more time
'Cos, we've come to tell you now
Yes, we've come to tell you how
How you can redeem the time that you have lost

Well, we agree there's a time for livin'
But can't you see, now's the time to give in?
We see the time going by each day
And there'll come a time when it's all gone away

It was some time in the past Jesus spent His time
When the skies were overcast, paying for your crime
And, we've come to tell you now
Yes, we've come to tell you how
How you can redeem the time that you have lost

No record (or recollection) of these words as yet

Left the straight and narrow way to … go your own
Don't you know God made you and you're … not your own
You've been away, been away too long
You can be back, back where you belong

You have done the things that you have … had in mind
And you think that life to you is … so unkind
You've been away, been away too long
You can be back, back where you belong

To be, where you belong, you see, where you belong
Wouldn't it be nice to be back at home and with Him
Don't think twice, why be all alone, just let Him
Bring you back, back, Come on

I can see the complications all arise
Clouds of fear and doubt appear before your eyes
You've been away, been away too long
You can be back, back where you belong

Jesus can solve all of your problems, this I know
And He's waiting for your answer, "Yes" or "No"
You've been away, you've been away too long
You can be back, back where you belong

In the beginning there was no power
Darkness was waiting for dawn
Then like the sunrise there came a Power
That was when this world of ours was born

A Power that is greater than all other powers
One to make a world yet change a life
This is the Spirit of Almighty God
He can make a difference in your life

There was a Man and He had the Power
To heal and to help and to love
Jesus was that Man. Yes, He had the Power
It had rested on Him like a dove

Jesus had gone, with Him went the Power
'Till something happened later on
Though He had left them, He sent His Power
Giving them the courage to go on

I'm the kind of guy who doesn't want to get involved
Do not disturb, do not disturb
I like it when you tell me all of my problems can be solved
But do not disturb, do not disturb

The people long ago didn't want to know
And so they took Him there, and they killed Him there
And they were just like you

I guess I like the easy life just sitting on the fence
Do not disturb, do not disturb
To think I'd shed my warm cocoon, doesn't make much sense
How absurd, do not disturb

Insulated from the cold, I'm content to lie
Do not disturb, do not disturb
The chrysalis that lies a sleep won't make the butterfly
Do not disturb, do not disturb

Contented with myself, I'd rather let His love go by
Do not disturb, do not disturb
So leave me alone and let this sleeping dog lie
Do not disturb, do not disturb

How absurd, do not disturb

Forgive me Lord for the things I've done to You
I've hurt You many times I know it's true
Oh please forget my past, I'm coming home at last
I'm sorry, forgive me please do

I know that I've done wrong so many times
I only think about You now and then
But because You're always near
I know that You will hear me
When I say "Forgive me, forgive me Lord"

Forgive me Lord, once again I turn my eyes
To heaven, to One Who hears my cries
I know that I'm no good I've not done things I should
I'm sorry, forgive me please do

Well you can change your clothes
And you can change the colour of your hair
Well you can change your town
And you can move yourself anywhere
But wherever you go
Your troubles will still be there

Well you can change your job
So you can better yourself
Get a lot of money
So you can know the meaning of wealth
But whatever you do,
You'll never never change yourself

Change the way you look at things
You have a one-track mind that clings to
Things that make life one long steep hill
You wanna change your way with people
And God, our God, can change, change you

(You) can change your fags,
Change the model of you car
You can change your ways
And you can make like your favourite star
But whatever you do,
You can't change what you are

Oh you can change your mind,
Change your socks and your ties
Change your little woman
For the very first pair of blue eyes
But it never never never never never satifies

No record (or recollection) of these words as yet

Transistor age, and life is busily buzzin'
There is so much to know, and so much to do
Hurry on, worry on, move along
You aint got long to live

Deeper in debt but you gotta keep up with the Jones's
Always buyin' the best, so why shouldn't you
Hurry on, worry on, move along
You aint got long to live

Step aside, review the situation
Step aside, and see the complication
Step aside, step aside
Just step aside for God, for He's got time for you

There's so much on your plate, no time for thinkin'
About the purpose of life, or God's way for you
Hurry on, worry on, move along
You aint got long to live

Busy man, tryin' to do the best he can
To conform himself to his own plan
Pity him, oh don't condemn

Busy nation, what's the celebration?
When your country's headin' for inflation
Can't you see you've forgotten your God's creation?

Oh, (no) no time! Too busy!
Oh, (no) no time! For you can't see!
That you are leavin' the things of your God behind
Isn't it about time you started re-erecting your mind?

Your machine, it's busy busily revolvin'
In a world that's constantly evolvin'
Can't you see that you need your problems solvin'?

Busy man, tryin' to do the best he can
To conform himself to his own plan
Pity him, oh don't condemn

The day will come when you'll be old and grey
And today will be another yesterday
Then you'll say, 'Jesus had a better way'
And deep down in your troubled mind
You'll hear these voices say

Stop! Stop!
And think what you're doin' with your life - Stop!
And think what you're doin' with your life - Stop!
And think what you're doin' with your life
Stop! Stop!
And think what you're doin' with your life - Stop!
Yeah think what you're doin' with your life - Stop!
And think what you're doin' with your life

You're doin' fine, enjoyin' yourself
Fast cars, fast girls, pennies and health (???)
Completely wrapped up in your own
Material wealth

You've got the sun up in the sky
You've got the twinkle of love in your eye
You're ridin' high, you're on top
Why should you want to ....

Snow covered mountains
Take my breath away
Glisten in the day
Snow covered mountains
Money couldn't buy
Reaching for the sky
But underneath is cold and bare
Not a single thing can live up there
In the snow
Oh, no no no

Things are not all that they appear to be
Life is just one big masquerade
Under the surface only loneliness
When these empty, empty pleasures fade

Snow covered mountains
Silence like a shroud
Covers them in cloud
Snow covered mountains
I'm sure that you'd agree
It's a lonely place to be
For underneath is cold and bare
Not a single thing can live up there
In the snow
Oh, no no no

Oh, no no no, Oh, no no no

No one ever ever sees you
When you're wearin' a frown
No one ever ever sees you
When you're feelin' down
Biggest clown in town

Hey Mr Pretend, hey Mr Pretend
Whoa Mr Pretend when will your illusion …
End of every day, you walk off all alone
Impressions you give to people are
Never your own
No one ever sees you misery
Only our Saviour He can see

Behind your smile you're cryin'
You're tryin' to hide it away
You're only frustrating yoursel
Thinking what people say
It won't matter some day

Lookin' through your frosted window pane
Nothing is clear
No faith to lean upon
You're livin' in a world of fear
When there's Somebody near

Hey Mr Pretend

Everyone knows about love
Everyone's heard about love
Everyone's talking 'bout
When they know nothing 'bout love

All mankind - hand in hand Is this love?
Or is there more to living
Less taking and more giving
And might there be more beyond
Myself and fellow man
As we walk on hand in hand

Everyone's heard about love
Everyone knows about love
Everyone's talking 'bout
When they know nothing 'bout love

Once a Man He died for all Is this love?
Or was it all for nothing
The spitting and the mocking
****
So that we might know the love of God
And, we could walk on hand in hand

Forbidden fruit tastes sweeter
That's what they say
Taste the better life! Taste the better life!

Ooooh, ooooh

You've tried so very hard
To hide the thing you know is true
You won't face the reality which is you
You tear yourself apart,
Trying to stop the pain inside
If only someone somehow could love you
Oooh

Ask yourself a little question
If no one seems to understand
Ask yourself a little question
If your life is getting out of hand
Ask yourself a little question
If you're in a lonely hearts club band
Ask yourself a little question
Could Jesus be the answer?
Could Jesus understand?
Oooh

Feelin' safe inside a dream of your own invention
Yes, you're safe inside a dream, won't let go
You won't let go.

In your mind, you're in greatest team
In your thoughts you're with the swingin' scene
When you look into a mirror
You're not exactly what you see
You see an image of a man
Ashamed to face the truth and so
He hides himself away inside a dream, poor soul
Inside a dream

What a life you're livin' day by day
Can't you see you're dreamin' your life away
When a' you gonna burst the bubble?
Come on down to earth and see
That there's Someone Who loves you
Who can help you face reality
God's the One to make you what you really want to be
What you want to be

When I feel uncertain, and I don't know where to go
I look up to Him
I don't know the answers to all my problems so
I look up to Him, I look up to Him

Even when my life is running smoothly
I still look up to Him, and He keeps close to me

Even though the future may not look very bright
I look up to Him
No matter what may happen, I know it's all right
'Cos I will be with Him, I will be with Him

Is it so hard? Is it so hard?

Is it so hard that you find it impossible
For you to make up your mind
You're using other people's thoughts and ideas
As you ride on life's merry-go-round

You might find it's so easy for you,
Sitting with nothing to say
Running around in increasing circles
Only moves you further away

Don't you know? Don't you know?
Somehow your faith has gotta show
Don't you know? Don't you know?
Somehow your faith has gotta show

Don't wait for tomorrow
When the sun shines high in the sky
The sun set hours ago Is it tomorrow, no it's today
Just another today It's today

Why are you waiting? Why are you waiting?

No use waiting for tomorrow
"Tomorrow never comes", they say
No use waiting. Won't you follow
Christ's teaching, accept Him today

Can't you believe what we're trying to tell you
You've got to make up your mind
We can't make the decision for you
It's there - Oh are you blind?

Oh, I've had my share of paintin' the town
Now I'm fed up with the things that bring me down
I've wasted lots of time and money tryin' to find my dream
But in the end, heartache's all I've found

Oh Lord, I want some peace of mind once more
I've tried but I can't find it all on my own
Oh Lord, please give me what I'm askin' for
I need your help so badly, I can't go on alone

I've cheated and I've lied to get my way
But in the end I've found it doesn't pay
I've got this guilty feelin', and no matter what I do
I find it's gettin' bigger every day

Misty the sky, cloudy your eye
Walking by
Church in the lane
A sign in the rain - on the wall
Drips from the board says, "Jesus is Lord"
"Bother this rain!"
Turning a bend, wish it would end

Move on in haste, enter a place
Heavily breathing
Deafening boom, filling the gloom
Clouding the mind
Sipping a Coke, see through the smoke
Shapes that are moving
Dancing around, lost in the sound

Look at the world situation
It's certainly a sight
How much better it would be if we all lived in the light
The neon lights of the city are not so very bright
We know what we're telling you is right
This wide wonderful world - it isn't right

They don't care, they don't care
They don't care, they don't care

Just look around, these are not hard to find
Take a look round, these are not hard to find

Wishing somehow their life could start anew

In all the confusion and pain,

There's hope for the world today

There's hope for the world today

Some days are bad and life seems hard
Too hard for you
But you seem to manage somehow to pull though
You don't know what waits for you around the corner
You may fine blue skies and maybe sadness too

Why don't you take a step of faith - ask God to help you
Let Him control your thoughts and guide you from now on
He'll meet your need
For He will lead
Together you will face the troubles from now on

Why don't you take a step of faith - ask God to help you
Let Him control your life and guide you from now on
He'll meet your need
For He will lead
Together you will face the troubles from now on

I'll stay if I have to
Go away if I have to
I'm looking for the reason for
The things we're doing day by day

I'll pay if I have to
Even pray if I have to
Go anywhere and everywhere
I'll find the thing I'm looking for

I want to know the reason for living
I'll go anywhere, I'll try anything
I want everything life can bring
I really want to know
Won't someone tell me please which way to go

All I want is the answer
Give everything fore the answer
I'm looking for the reason for
The things we're doing day by day

My search will be over
When I shall discover
That certain kind of peace of mind
I'll find the thing I'm looking for

There are many many ways of livin'
And you choose the road you want to walk along
You can take everything that life is givin'
And just let the world push you on

One way you can choose is hard to follow
You won't make it if you go it on your own
It gets harder if you wait until tomorrow
The answer is yours alone

The Christian life is never very easy
Don't expect an easy time
Leave everything behind you
Step into a life worthwhile

Six o'clock on a Sunday morning
Lookin' up to the skies See the sun rise
Looking around on a Sunday
Lookin' up to the skies I see the sun rise

I can see the birds, the trees,
The grass and waters that flow
I can see God's love in
All the things that live and grow
But unlike the sunshine
Unlike a smile
I know that God's love shines - all of the time

There's nothing to do, now it's Sunday morning
I've got plenty of time
So let the sun shine
No sign of rain, it's a beautiful morning
Good to be living today
Feelin' this way

Get up in the morning, you don't feel fine
You go to work at the usual time
You buy a paper to read on the bus
Are clockwork people still making a fuss?

When in work, you can't wait to get home
Give your hair a wash and your face a comb
You go to town and hit the wine
But you never really have a good time

Because you're not livin'. No, no you're not livin'
Clockwork people goin' round and round
They know not where their life is bound
Clockwork people

There is an answer if you want to know
But it's not an easy way to go
It may mean a sacrifice or two
But we know it's worthwhile for you

Jesus is the answer we've all found
He keeps your feet right on the ground
Believe us you need Him and that's no joke
Or in the end you'll go up in ……

Without livin, without livin'
Clockwork people goin' round and round
They know not where their life is bound
Clockwork people
Clockwork people goin' round and round
They know not where their life is bound
Clockwork people

Sitting alone by the fire
Watching the shadows on the wall
Letting my mind wander
To any thoughts that care to call

Assessing the words I have heard
Turning them over in my mind
Yesterday I didn't care
Today life's answer I must find

Things disappear completely
Enveloping cloud fills the room
As God's love takes over me
I break out of my tomb

It had to be
It happened to me
I look to see
Will it happen to you?

See … all the people gathered near Him
To hear Him
How … could it be that they would hurt Him
Desert Him

They wouldn't believe what He said
Instead they hung Him up
And left Him dead

See … all the people gathered near us
To hear us
I … wonder if some one will leave us
Without Jesus

I … wonder if you ever think of
Believin'
You … don't know if you ought to take Him
Or leave Him

(When, oh when will it end?
Maybe around the corner
Around the bend
)

Who can be against us if God is for us?
He did not spare Jesus, but gave Him up for us all
Can't we trust Him to give us everything we need?

Who would dare accuse us whom God has chosen?
He's made us free from sin, who an condemn?
Only Christ, and He died for us, He rose for us,
He reigns in power, He prays for us

Can trouble, pain or persecution .... (oh oh)
Take us from the love of Christ? (oh no)
Can lack of clothes and food, danger to life and limb
Take us from the love of Him?

We win the victory, through Him Who proved His love
There is no power in earth of in heaven above
That can take us from His love, the love of God
In Jesus Christ our Lord above

Getting rich inside a city
Living close to poverty
Of all the things of God that they don't know
Their race and colour divides them
Each hides the other behind himself
He only wants his wealth to grow

This mankind, this mankind
This mankind weighs heavy on my mind

What if the city should tumble?
The ground beneath them crumble
Those streets of gold return to clay
When faced with death and hardship
It's true that man will worship
A God Who's never heard him pray

Born to die, that we might die to live
Christ was born to die
That we might die to live
He will make your future live
If to Him your life you'll give

They heard Him cry, "Forgive them Father"
Their words were "Crucify"
He said, "Forgive them Father
"For they know not what they do"
Those who understood were few

I do … do, do, do, do
Yes, yes I do
Do, do believe

People have been fighting for so long
There's something wrong
Has man lost his direction?
By turning from God's perfection

Imperfect human being I may be
But in reality
I can see clearly the direction
Although I need so much correction

Believing when Christ gave His life
He made mine secure
Believing through eternity
I will know Jesus so much more

Feel free to ask me any question
Without hesitation
I'll try my best to answer
Don't worry, I don't mind the laughter

Hope that I will in no way confuse you
I only want you to
Find a better way of living
You'll find God forgiving

SIMPLE MAN AT HEART (Early 1970s)

or

from the (home) CD CB11
Maybe one day soon we will grow old
Can you see me in your crystal ball?
When I'm 65, will I still be alive?
Maybe one day soon, it won't be long

Look around and tell me what you see
I see a world and it's crowding in on me
No one seems to care
Is there someone there?
Maybe you'll find out before too long

Listen to man, you can hear him cry
It's so easy to be born
But it's so hard to die
See the world turning round in space
Can we find our way?
Can we find our place?

Maybe one day soon you'll think again
Think about the things that should have been
Maybe you've been blind
Could there still be time
Maybe it won't be so very long

Men were held deep in prison
Hidden away for no one to see
Chained to walls for what they believed in
'Till they died eventually
Faith was all they had to keep them
Faith in what they could not see
Faith that Jesus was there with them
Faith from madness kept them free

If you won't believe in Jesus
You'll never be free
I hear people sayin'
They can't believe in what they can't see
They can't believe in what they can't see

A favourite pastime of the Romans
A show that they all flocked to see
The slaughter of defenceless Christians
A cruel phase in history
Faith kept these men from denyin'
That only one God ever could be
Faith to die for what they believed in
Faith 'cos Jesus had set them free

Someone to change your way of livin'
Someone to make you what you should be
Someone to change your way of thinkin'
Someone Who's present constantly
To help you face what you're facin'
And give you faith accordingly
To change your concept of believin'
So that you'll say Jesus has set you free

I'm just a simple man at heart
Not caring or worrying
I could never believe anyone
If they told me Jesus
Could ever give my life wings
Life's dream had to be reality
For me the future was sealed
I knew the grass was not greener
Just because it was growin',
Growin' in another man's field

But for all my hesitating
Soon I found that I was taking
Steps that were changing my life
Friends said, "What about tomorrow?"
"Will it last or will it go?"
I said, "No, for Jesus changed my life"

Some things that I don't understand
Some things that I still need to learn
I just want to do what God has planned
But I'm happy waitin'
Waitin' for His return
I'm still a simple man at heart
But in these words that I sing
I just want to say to everyone
"Give your life to Jesus
And He will give your life wings"

Where ... are they taking my Lord?
Where ... are they taking my Lord?

Friends were sleeping, the Son of Man was praying
"Father I must do Your will"
A crowd is coming, staves and swords are bringing
Whom they arrest, a kiss will tell

This was their hour, and the power of darkness was with them
They dare not take Him in the day
Innocent maybe, but He knew what had to be
All of His friends had to flee away

Dawn was breaking, a trial was taking place
Men were hired to lie
Jesus was silent, they asked "Who are You sent by?"
"If You say You're the Son of God, You must ...."
"If You say You're the Son of God, You must ...." "Die!"

Standin' there in the open air
People passing by would stare
With strange expressions
Wond'rin' what was goin' on

The preacher man was shoutin' loud
Tryin' to get the attention of the crowd
But the people
Just kept movin' on

And when it came to my turn
I didn't know what to say ......

Brother John with his megaphone
Callin' people from their homes
To come and stand around
Before it starts to rain

Standin' there in the afternoon
With Mrs Jones singin' out of tune
I had to cough
And hide my head in shame

And when it came to my turn
I didn't know what to say
So I said, "Hey! Somebody changed my life
"Hey! Won't you hear what I say?
"Hey! Jesus, He showed me
"There's only one way"
"Hey" Somebody changed my life
"Hey! Won't you hear what I say?
"Hey! Jesus, He showed me
"There's only one way"

Can you picture yellow?
Yellow's afraid to know
What lies ahead in life come tomorrow

Springtime is green,
Yet what lies unseen?
Envy and jealousy hidden in between

If life is a picture, only God can see
And we each have our colour appropriately
Which colour would God paint me?

The anger of red,
Remember the lies that were spread
And all the cruel words that were said

Sorrow is blue,
Wanting, needing some one to
Give all the love they've got 'till the sun breaks through

Lord Jesus, won't You hear my prayer?
Won't You let me know if You are really there?
Lord Jesus, won't You take my hand
Won't You lead me on to the promised land

Some days I feel high, some days I feel so low
Some days I don't know if I really care
If You could only help me.
Stop me puttin' on this show
Lord, Lord, Lord if You would hear my prayer

If only I were free. If only I could fly (away)
If only I could get away from myself
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.
What's in a name?
Lord can it help to free me 'cos I'm so ashamed.

Well there's only one way, and there's only today
And there's only one time for you to make up your mind

A rich man came to Jesus,
He said, "I've kept all Your commandments"
"I've tried to live as good a life as I can,
"Since I was a boy"
Jesus turned and said to him,
"Go and sell all your possessions
"Let go of all the things you love,
"And come and follow Me"

'Cos there's only one way ....

A holy man came to Jesus,
He said. "I know that You're a good man"
"No one could do the things that You can do,
"Unless God were with Him"
Jesus turned and said to him,
"You've got to be born again
"You've got to take on a new life,
"A real life a true life"

'Cos there's only one way ....

If you think there's nothing left for you to try
And you feel there's no one you can rely on
And you think there's nothing left for you
Try letting Jesus take a hold of you

'Cos there's only one way ....

The Lord would say to you,
"Come on board, little children"
"Come on board, little children, come on board."
The Lord would say to you,
"Come on board, little children"
"Come on board, little children, come on board."

Listen to the "freedom train", can't you hear it coming?
You can see the smoke blowin' over the rise
Listen to the whistle blowin'
Makes you feel like you wanna be goin'
Goin' to your home in the skies
And the Lord would say to you, "Come on board"

The Lord would say to you,
"Come on board, little children"
"Come on board, little children, come on board."
The Lord would say to you,
"Come on board, don't be lazy"
"Come on board, don''t be crazy, now come on board."

All aboard, all aboard, all aboard
All aboard, all aboard, all aboard

Lord, You have searched me and You've known me
You know everything I'm doing
You know everything I'm saying
You have been behind me and before me
Such knowledge is too wonderful to know

Where can I hide from You presence?
If I go up into heaven, You're there
If I go down in the earth, You're there
If I think that the darkness will protect me
The darkness shines as bright as the light to You

I will praise You for Your great creation
You were there at its dawn
You were there when I was born
All my steps in life are ordered by You
I can't do anything if it's not with You

Well, well, well
When will they learn?
Well, well, well
When will they learn about
What they've been without?
Lord, please don't let them leave You out
Won't You make them see
What You've given me
Tell them all that You've told me

Hmmm, hmmm, hmmm
What do you think?
Well, well, well
What do you think?
Are you lonely?
(Tell me now) are you blue?
Listen, 'n case you're missin' out
Jesus Christ is the answer

Hmmm, hmmm, hmmm
When will they learn?
Well, well, well
When will they learn?

Left my home when I was
No more than a boy
I asked my father to give me
What would be mine some day

I met the kind of people
I ought not to know
The kind who would take your money
And leave you when your cash was low

Even my father's servants
They have more than I have
What if I offered my service
What would be his reply?

They call me the prodigal son
Nothing I own
Since I have squandered my money
Far away, far away
Far away from home
I'm goin', I'm goin', I'm goin' home
I'm goin', I'm goin', I'm goin' home

Since a famine has hit this land
My feet have walked the desert sand
As my father he runs to greet me
He puts clothes on my back
And shoes on the feet of me

Be in my thoughts and in my thinking
Be in my mind and in my understanding
Be in my heart and in my believing
Be in my love and in my loving

Lord please take all of my life, not just a little
Don't just take part of my life, not just the heart of my life
But move through every part of my life
And then break me down.
And then re-make me.
And then fill me with Your love

Be in my eyes and in my seeing
Be in my ears and in my listening
Be in my words and in my speaking
Be in my life and in my living

Lord please take ...

Be in my thoughts, be in my mind
Be in my heart, be in my love
Be in my eyes, be in my ears
Be in my words, be in my life

Born of a virgin, an unwanted child
The gentle Jesus so meek and so mild
Hated by royalty for Who He was
The Son of God, the Prince, the Prince of love

He's My Son, in Whom I am well pleased
He's My Son, in Whom I am well pleased

John the Baptist was surprised
When Jesus came to him to be baptised
A Power from above was given to Him
The Spirit of God came down, down like a dove

Up above Jerusalem
Satan took Jesus to tempt Him
"Worship me, I'll give You all You can see"
He said, "Satan! Get back, back, back behind Me!"

People all around Me are pushin' to see
Shoutin', "Jesus won't You please heal me"
He said, "I am the way, I am the door, I will heal you all"

Behold I stand at the door and knock
Behold I stand at the door and knock
If any man will hear My voice
And open up the door
I will come in with him
And dine with him
And he will dine with Me

Behold I am the way and the truth and the life
Behold I am the way and the truth and the life
If any man will hear My voice
And follow after Me
Then he will find the way
And know the truth
And he will ive forever

IN MERRY ENGLAND (1970s)
Sam Pennington

or

from the (home) CD CB13

In merry England,
Many years ago
There lived crusaders
Who to war did go

They fought and they slaughtered
In their Holy War
Fighting for what they thought was right
Killing

Star of wonder, star of light
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy perfect light

Here in our country,
So-called Christian land
Man claims he is guided by
By God's right hand

Cast in our fury,
Our wars seldom cease
Lost in our fantasies
Of peace

Understanding and wisdom
Don't come from learning
And knowledge can't attain
The love which Jesus Christ brings

Just for the asking
We can possess
Gifts of the Spirit
To help the helpless
