Astoria Ballroom (Rawtenstall)
(7 January 1966)

In January 1966 the crossBeaTs played at the Astoria Ballrom, Rawtenstall (Rossendale) - part of what is now Greater Manchester. You can read here a letter from someone who was at the meeting. The speaker was Richard Kayes, though we don't know at this stage who might have organised this 'Christian' event at this secular venue.

Astoria in the 1950s   Astoria in the (late) 1960s - and for sale

This hall was a traditional 'ballroom' opened in 1932 having been converted from a car showroom. In the 1960s it was one of Greater Manchester's venues for the emerging 'beat scene'.

Many famous groups played there including The Animals, The Kinks, The Who (May 1965), The Small Faces, The Moody Blues, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Hollies, The Yardbirds, The Rocking Berries and Unit 4 plus 2.

The ballroom closed one month after we played there - on 7 February 1966. A small garden and plaque commemorate its place in the history of the town.
